Task and objective

Our customer, an automotive supplier with more than 4,000 employees worldwide, wants to make repetitive engineering processes more efficient and reliable. These include the analysis of stakeholder requirements and the verification of developed systems using test cases (around 5,000 per year). For both processes, engineers needed about 10 to 15 minutes in each instance. Despite global standards, the quality of the results depended on the expertise of individual experts.

Solution

Our AI team worked closely with the customer's subject matter experts to define what AI could achieve in both cases. An analysis of the existing data in the PLM system CIM Database led to the identification of two use cases that quickly deliver noticable improvements. Corresponding prototypes, based on an LLM, were refined through prompt engineering in multiple iteration cycles. This resulted in two operational AI assistants in a short period of time.

This allows you to systematically embed current and future AI functionalities within your company. This occurs in a hybrid environment where data remains secure within the company, while computing power is provided from the cloud infrastructure.

Fourier AI is more than a single AI model. It consists of the Fourier Chat, which is directly accessible to users within the system, several technological extensions in your CONTACT Elements instance such as an MCP Server and the vector database, and the Fourier Cloud. There, AI requests are orchestrated and processed using a combination of AI models. Therefore, Fourier AI is not merely an interface to any generic Large Language Model (LLM), but an end-to-end solution for your AI applications along the Digital Thread.

Several factors are relevant for the industrial application of AI. Fourier AI provides highly data-focused answers and always delivers source references instead of hallucinating responses. Your data is stored exclusively within your instance. Furthermore, Fourier AI operates in alignment with CONTACT Elements' role and rights concept. The assistant only gains access to content that authenticated users also have access to.

Fourier AI does not rely on a single AI model but combines the latest Large Language Models on the market (for example, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Anthropic) with specialized AI models from CONTACT Software (for instance, for multi-modal similarity search of 3D models). An orchestration service in the Fourier Cloud analyzes incoming requests and selects the best models to answer the query.

The Fourier Cloud and all AI models are hosted by AWS on European soil, thereby complying with EU data protection laws.

Fourier AI converts your data into embeddings for AI use. These are stored in the vector database already present within your CONTACT Elements instance. For each query, Fourier AI selects the necessary embeddings and transmits them to the Fourier Cloud. There, the most suitable AI model for the query is selected, engaged with the embeddings, and the response is sent back. The Fourier Cloud is hosted on European servers, compliant with GDPR. Information processed along this path is neither stored nor used for third-party purposes.

Fourier AI is available as of CONTACT Elements 15.9. It can handle tasks within the context of objects, eliminate language barriers through in-system translations, and boost innovation capacity. Additionally, starting with CONTACT Elements 2026.2, Fourier AI will also be able to semantically process your data and information and handle complex tasks with high contextual accuracy.

Yes. The AI Act, the European Union's regulation on artificial intelligence, is the world's first comprehensive AI legislation. Based on a careful internal assessment of its functionality and intended purpose, we classify Fourier AI as a limited risk AI system in accordance with Article 52 of the EU AI Act. This means that specific transparency obligations apply to our product. We fulfill our responsibilities under the AI Act by:

  • Clearly and unequivocally informing users when they interact with our AI system.
  • Labeling content (such as texts, reports, or other data) generated by the AI as such.

When the software is used in individual customer contexts, customers are responsible for assessing the level of risk.
