Kummler+Matter accelerates product development and engineering with CIM Database

The Swiss catenary systems partner is using CONTACT’s CIM Database Cloud to create a digital backbone for product development and project engineering. The PLM system enables Kummler+Matter to optimize processes across the entire product lifecycle, respond to customer inquiries more quickly, and lay the strategic foundation for its digital transformation.

When trains travel through the Gotthard Tunnel at 250 km/h, technology from Kummler+Matter reliably supplies them with power. For more than 100 years, the company has been developing customized solutions for railways, trams, and trolleybuses. To accelerate its digitalization and help employees manage growing volumes of data and increasingly complex projects, the company is implementing CIM Database Cloud from CONTACT Software.

The PLM system serves as Kummler+Matter’s central platform for providing technical product data throughout the entire product lifecycle – in a structured, quality-assured, and traceable manner. Third-party systems such as CAD, BIM, and ERP are integrated via interfaces. This allows the engineering team to efficiently manage drawings, requirements, parts, bills of materials, and variants – while also benefiting from integrated project management.

CIM Database provides Kummler+Matter with several key benefits: It accelerates product development, reduces costs, and brings the disciplines of mechanics, power electronics, electronics, and software closer together. By streamlining processes across the entire product lifecycle, the company can respond to customer inquiries significantly faster.

For system development, the PLM system provides greater planning reliability in complex projects. Changes to components, variants, or requirements are transparent and traceable and can be systematically integrated into ongoing projects – improving on-time delivery and quality while lowering project risks.

With CIM Database Cloud, Kummler+Matter reduces internal IT workload and creates a scalable foundation for future requirements. The solution is being rolled out at two locations in Switzerland and will be available to employees in product development, engineering, procurement, manufacturing, warehousing, product management, and sales.“

Our projects are becoming increasingly complex, and the volume of data is growing. With CIM Database, we are creating a reliable foundation that enables us to make decisions faster and continuously improve our development processes,” says Dennis Darra, Head of Development at Kummler+Matter. CONTACT’s solution stood out in particular for its modular architecture. “Looking ahead, we plan to gradually extend the PLM platform toward supply chain and production, so that digital product data can be used seamlessly from development to manufacturing and procurement.”

Kummler+Matter AG covers the entire field of catenary technology, offering customized products and a comprehensive range of services for railways, trams, and trolleybuses. From planning and system development to installation, the company supports every phase of a project. Kummler+Matter AG employs around 160 people and is part of the French infrastructure services provider COLAS.
