Showtime at the Fraunhofer Center for Digital Transformation

The Governing Mayor of Berlin and Senator for Science and Research, Michael Müller, visited the Berlin Center for Digital Transformation. In the IoT Lab at Fraunhofer FOKUS, he informed himself about projects in which industry is involved. The focus was also on CONTACT Elements for IoT.

The Berlin Center for Digital Transformation develops and evaluates practical solutions for the areas "Industry & Production", "Mobility & City of the Future", "Healthcare" and "Critical Infrastructures & Energy". It combines the expertise of four Fraunhofer Institutes based in Berlin and demonstrates a broad spectrum of networked applications at its various transfer centers. These include the 5G Testbed, the Hardware for CPS Lab, the Industry 4.0 Lab and the IoT Lab.

The Center has been working closely with partners from industry and IT since its foundation and intends to further intensify this cooperation. The State of Berlin, the Fraunhofer Society and the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF) are now supporting the second phase until the end of 2020 following a successful scientific evaluation.

During his visit to the IoT Lab, the Governing Mayor of Berlin emphasized that the capital is the right address for forward-looking companies: "Here you will find a dynamic research landscape and the best opportunities for cooperation to shape digital change. The Fraunhofer Institutes and the Center for Digital Transformation play a very special role in this structure".

Dr. Patrick Müller of CONTACT Software (centre photo) shares this assessment from his own experience. For more than a year, the software manufacturer has been operating a reference implementation for predictive maintenance at the Center, which the company has developed together with Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK. Based on the CONTACT Elements for IoT platform, the solution connects a machine tool to its digital twin, enabling continuous condition monitoring.

"We want to deepen the good cooperation and are currently planning the next joint development activities for the Industrial Internet of Things," says CONTACT Manager Müller. "The Berlin Center has outstanding scientists and the necessary infrastructure to quickly implement new ideas and test their practical benefits in operation."
