Open Source Software: Python expands leadership

CONTACT Software has been using Python for many years. Today, the open programming language is at the top of the popularity scale and not only first choice when it comes to AI.

Since 1999 Python has been the foundation of CONTACT's development environment and software stack alongside C++. Meanwhile there are countless "Pythonistas" - and the worldwide fan base is growing and growing.

The Economist traces the success story of the open programming language in the article “Python has brought computer programming to a vast new audience” and explains why it is currently gaining even more importance. This applies above all to Artificial Intelligence (AI), one of the megatrends in the context of digitization.

Python will also retain its top position in the new IEEE Language Ranking 2018. It is remarkable that this applies to three of four evaluated categories: Web, Enterprise and Embedded Systems. For five years, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the world's largest engineering association, has been publishing a ranking of the most popular programming languages in its Spectrum magazine.

The IEEE rankings take into account search trends, relevance in social media, job postings as well as GitHub repositories and mentions in journal articles. In 2017, Python landed for the first time in first place, and leads again this year in each range with 100 out of 100 points.
