Open Source makes enterprises better

CONTACT Software makes use of open-source components to provide businesses with the best technologies and services currently available. These include the open programming language Python, which has once again achieved top positions in current rankings.

Python is continuing its upwards trend. In all the rankings, the object-oriented programming language can always be found in the top few positions. “This confirms us once again in our choice of Python and our early decision to opt for open-source components,” says CONTACT's head of development, Frank Patz-Brockmann.

Alongside C++, Python forms the basis for CONTACT's development environment and software stack. As a result, customers benefit from one of the most powerful open environments, and with PowerScript they possess all the tools they need to use Python in combination with the CONTACT Elements platform.

A look at the programming language rankings on the GitHub platform shows that an open-source approach to language design pays off. Consequently, the popularity of Python is continuing to grow. This is also proved by new rankings from June 2017.

Python placed second in the PYPL (Popularity of Programming Language) index. The logic behind this evaluation is that the more developers search for tutorials on a given programming language, the more interesting it is. By contrast, the analysts from RedMonk use an algorithm based on the data from the GitHub and StackOverflow developer communities. Here, Python claimed third position.

The choice of Python in 1999 underscores CONTACT's pioneering role in promoting forward-looking technologies. In 2005, when Gartner first conducted a survey of the extent to which open-source software was used in companies, the share was still significantly less than ten percent. Nowadays, open-source components are considered to be an indication of the quality of a software solution. That is why Python is now used, for example, by Google, CERN and Mozilla.
