The current IoT study "Smart Industrial Products 2019" by CONTACT Software, Fraunhofer IPK and VDI shows the importance of smart products in German industry. At the same time, it illustrates the high uncertainty of companies with regard to the effects on business models and the required IT infrastructures.
Smart products are a central topic for the German industry - regardless of the industry. This is shown by the current study "Smart Industrial Products 2019", which has now been presented by CONTACT Software together with Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK and the Association of German Engineers VDI.
According to the survey, 87 percent of all respondents said they were already working on the topic. Nearly half already operate smart products. This result also reflects the growing number of smart products on the market. Smart products are on the corporate agenda for a variety of reasons. However, the most important driver for the launch is - besides the goal of increasing sales - above all the pressure of the market.
With an increasing use of software and the increasing integration of third-party services into products, companies are currently facing a multitude of challenges: Existing business models must be innovated and the necessary know-how and personnel must be integrated into development, production and service. System components that were previously considered separately are becoming increasingly integrated.
To what extent German industry has already accepted these challenges, the experts questioned employees in engineering related areas from management, department and team management as well as from the development of small, medium-sized and large companies across all sectors. The participants gave their assessments of the topic in the fields of business model, variance and maintenance, update, digital twin, user data/user behavior and IT infrastructure/clouds.
In this context, the study provides clear insights into the current strengths and deficits of German industry. It shows what changes are expected in business models and customer communication and how consistently companies are implementing smart products and integrated services.
